I can't believe I was here!

These are my adorable grandparents. They were visiting all the way from Houston Texas. A couple of days before their departure, my Grandpa called me and said that he would love some portraits of his sweet wife. I happily obliged! We scheduled the time and place and were ready for photos! The day came and when I saw my Grandpa, he said "I could hardly sleep last night! I was so excited for you to take photos of Kay!" I thought that was darling.

It's not hard to take a beautiful photo when you have a beautiful subject with beautiful light.

My Grandpa the jokester always makes her laugh.

This is the most adorable thing I have ever heard:

My Grandpa told my Grandma that he was so excited to have a beautiful portrait of her. She said "Well why didn't you do it when I was 40?" And he stopped dead in his tracks, looked her square in the eye and said "Because you are more beautiful now than you have ever been! And you weren't half bad when I married you at 16 and a half!!"

I have to tell you how much I enjoyed this shoot! Natural photos of a natural family in a natural setting (the home) with natural light. It was so wonderful. I am not too much of a fan of anything gimmickey (overly done props, poses, backdrops, and editing) so Kathy really felt my style and I'm so glad she suggested we do this shoot in the home. That's how day to day life is, and that's how the memories will be, so that's how the photos should be. They were so wonderful to photograph, and hopefully next time we can get Dad (who was away) in on the action!

Angel's Landing

It's no secret that since it has been snowing even in mid-april, I love to go to warmer weather in Southern Utah. This trip, I wanted to make it a point to hike one of my favorite hikes in the world which is Angel's Landing. Who better to hike it with than my adventurous best friend Jessica. This time of year is the most perfect time to hike it because it's not too cold, and not too hot. The hike is mostly in the sun and I can imagine if I tried to hike it in the summer, I would pass out from the heat!

See the highest tip on the left rock in the photo, that is where we would end up in many heavy breaths, sweat droplets, and a couple hours later!

It's always a gamble to hand your camera to a stranger and hope they take a decent photo of you, this one proves to be 25% decent. Jess and I are totally out of focus. haha Oh well! At least we have evidence that we did it!

Trail

This is a very steep part of the hike. It's a series of switchbacks called "Walter's Wiggles". While hiking, Jess and I kept exclaiming "Screw you Walter!!!"

So the last half mile of the hike is pretty dang scary. You have to hold on to chains so you don't plummet to your death with thousand foot cliffs on either side of you. People die on it quite frequently and they say on the shuttle "Beware! Fatalities have occurred!" My heart especially raced this trip because I kept thinking about the woman last year who just misplaced her foot and fell to her death. I also kept thinking that I have a lot more responsibility this time than the last time I did it because I have a beautiful baby girl who needs me!

I didn't dare take my camera out on the scary parts because almost as scary as myself plummeting to my death is my camera equipment plummeting to its death. But this photo shows on the far left a chain and a steep cliff next to it.

These are not my photos because I did not DARE take my camera out at these points of the hike, but I just wanted to show a couple of the scary parts so you know what I'm talking about.

You can easily see in these photos how one mis step could result in death. You are one brave soul Joe for pulling out your camera at these points in the hike!

We had a blast, and were so happy to have done it! It was a beautiful day with beautiful company. If you are physically able and not deathly afraid of heights, you should really give this hike a try! It's pretty amazing!

Aren't her eyes so incredible? It was the first thing I noticed about her when she was born. She has an eye condition called Aniridia. This is a genetic condition she was born with which means that she has no irises (the colored part of the eye) so her eyes are completely black. The condition has its drawbacks, (like muy expensivo medical bills) but it sure makes her eyes so beautiful!

First Haircut

Would you believe that Claire was two and a half when she had her first haircut? I just couldn't ever bring myself to cut that sweet little baby curl that she still had. Well, her hair got a little scraggly, so I took her to one of the only people I trust with my tresses, my best friend Jessica. I could have died of cuteness overload while she was getting her haircut. She was just this tiny little thing on this big salon chair. She acted just like that was where she belonged. She is such a little princess! Here are some photos I'll cherish forever from her first haircut.

Snow Canyon

Remember how I hate winter? I think the worst of it is just after Christmas. So lucky for me, my folks live in St George! Claire and I escaped the drab, cold, inversion and went to St George...for like a month! It was absolutely we needed! Brant jokes that I'm "solar powered", so the sunshine was good for my energy levels. :) He got to come down and visit on the weekends to escape the winter too. We got to play outside at the park almost every day. Plus when my mom makes delicious home made meals every day, it makes it tempting to stay! One of the most beautiful places down south is Snow Canyon state park. It's worth every last penny of the $6 entrance fee.

Claire had fun playing in the Dunes.

I'll end with my favorite shot. Yes, you can get that much contrast in lanscape in one photo.

I don't know about you, but I shut down in the winter, altogether. I hunker down inside, drink hot cocoa, curse the cold through my window, and try and stay warm. Although I pretty much shut down, I was still shooting. I have a TON of personal work to show you in the days to come. For starters, here is a photo of my sweet Claire. Isn't she beautiful?

2011 theme: Strength

As I have previously stated, I love to share a personal side with you on my photography blog.

I've never really been too keen on setting new years resolutions. I've always kind of thought that they tend to set you up for future disappointment or when setting them, you can be too hard on yourself. So instead of resolutions this year, I have decided to set a theme. This year's theme is "Strength".

Last year, I spread myself far far far too thin and committed myself to too many things. And they were all things that I had to give 100% of myself to. This left hardly any of myself for myself, and it wore me down. So this year, particularly in these early months, I want to build back up my strength in many ways. And I'll tell you what, these past couple weeks off, have been just blissful!

* I vow to hopefully never spread myself that thin again.

* In case you didn't know, I have struggled with insomnia for years. It's the pits. I would never wish it on anyone! I want to take care of myself physically by exercising more so I can sleep better.

* My yoga instructor said something that really struck me. She said that in your late teens and all through your 20s is when you build bone density and strength to draw from for your entire life, and that it's critical to build it up during that time. I was like, "goodness gracious! I need to exercise more!" I want to be a capable old lady who can lift her gallon of milk so I better start building up my bone density now!

* I of course want to become more spiritually strong this year so that I can hopefully better oveercome my weaknesses. More regularly attending church (Yay for the schedule change!) and by doing things on my own to help build up that strength. A church leader of mine also said something that really stuck with me. He said that often times the Lord won't take away your burdens or hardships, but instead when you rely on Him, He will make you STRONGER to better withstand them. I need to become stronger.

* As hard as it is for me (because I honestly love everyone and want to be everyone's friend), I need to put a little distance between myself and those that tend to bring me down. I had a couple people this past year who really brought me down. As much as I would love to be best friends with everyone, I need to remember what a wise older gentleman said in church yesterday, "A true friend is someone who makes you feel good about yourself when you are in their presence." Dear friends who are so positive and great, I love you! And hope that I have expressed my gratitude to you. If not, I resolute to show more appreciation this year. :)

...Thus, I will become stronger. :)

2010 in Review

Every year just keeps getting better and better. This year was no exception. I cannot believe all that I was able to do/see/accomplish/learn this year. 2010 was full of special little moments with my family, and some bigger memories too. I probably took more trips and vacations this year than I have in any other year. I don't know why, opportunities to go somewhere fun kept arising! All in all, I am so grateful for the experiences this year has brought, I am thankful for my wonderful family and the love we share and look forward for all that 2011 has in store. Here is my year in review:

What better way to start of this post than with this cute face! We didn't do much in January. Isn't it such a boring month? Just tried to stay warm inside. :) Highlight: Raising this beautiful girl. Lowlight: Still winter. UGH!

Late February, My mother in law and sisters in law and I all took a girls trip to San Francisco. It was so exciting for me because I had never been before! We had the most memorable time! Highlight: Japanese tea gardens and eating fresh crab. Lowlight: Literally seeing a man jump off of the Golden Gate Bridge on our bay cruise. "Worst cruise ever!"

In March we took our first little family trip to St George over spring break to visit family. Brant and I did a little hiking in Zion National Park, and Claire got to play with all her Pease cousins. It was wonderful to get out of the cold and into the sun! Highlight: Sunshine and warmth! Lowlight: We had to come back home to winter.

In April, it snowed. Winter lasts for.e.ver. in Salt Lake! But then thankfully Spring finally sprung and we went outside as much as we could to have some fun! Highlight: Planting our garden! Lowlight: Spring didn't come sooner than it did.

In May, Brant had a birthday, Claire and I went to Texas to visit my sister and Grandparents, and Brant and I celebrated our 5 year anniversary. Highlight: May is one of my favorite months! I loved when Brant took me on a hot air balloon ride. It was so fun! Lowlight: I honestly can't remember any! :)

Ft Worth Texas

5 year anniversary at the Canyons in Park City

June: We went on some family hikes to the mountains. The farmers markets opened! My mom, sister, and I went on a lovely girls trip to San Diego. Claire turned two! My parents came to visit for her birthday which was extra special! Highlight: Oh I loved every memory from this month! Lowlight: The month went by toooo fast.

July: We took Claire to see the fireworks for the first time this 4th of July. She loved it! The Dunn family reunion was held in Bend Oregon. We stayed in Sun River, went to crater lake, and just had an absolute blast with the family! We enjoyed playing in the back yard and swimming, bbqing and all the fun things summer brings. Highlight: The Dunn family reunion and everything about it. Lowlight: We drove to Oregon in the middle of the night so hopefully Claire would sleep, and guess what? She did not sleep one single wink. The child will not sleep in the car to save her life! And, I got knocked on my butt with a really bad cold, in the middle of summer!

August: I had a birthday! But honestly, I do not remember what I did for it! In the beginning of the month I went down to Vegas to attend Skip's Summer School. Claire started preschool! She's such a big girl. Highlight: Skip's summer school and all the amazing people I was able to meet. Lowlight: I was too dang busy for my own good!

Driving to Vegas

September: We had the most beautiful month! The summer seemed to last a little longer which I eagerly welcomed. We went to the State Fair which was a blast! Highlight: Claire's face on going down the big slide (see below). Lowlight: Summer coming to a close. :(

In the end she loved it!

October: I think we went to Logan to visit Brant's family and for other occasions 3 times this month. One trip, Brant took me on a drive to Tony's Grove to see all the beautiful leaves. I went to Moab with my friends Hayley and Sarah for a photography workshop. We hiked to delicate arch and got caught in a scary flash flood. We also had our family pictures taken. Highlight: Beautiful fall foliage, and Halloween with the Pease's. Lowlight: Brant's Grandma Pease passed away.

November: It was only a month ago, but it is such a blur! I can't remember much from it! This just goes to show how busy I was! We spent Thanksgiving with my in-laws in Logan. We had our first big snowfall, and my parents came to visit. While they were here, we took Claire to the planetarium.

December: Christmastime! Christmas tree, and more snow. Brant took me to Hawaii which was amazing! When we got back we took Claire to see the lights which she loved, and we spent Christmas with my parents.

I feel so blessed to have such a fulfilling year. It was so fun and amazing. I hope you all have the best 2011 EVER!!!

I can't believe I haven't shown these yet! We had our photos taken by Sarah Knight, and Hayley Alberts. I am so thankful they could come out and take our photos!!! These are precious treasures I will cherish forever and ever! Thank you girls SO much!!!

We had our photos done in October (which by the way is the best time to get them done for leaves, fall foliage, and to get them done and ready before Christmas).We headed to just this end of the road random place that had decent leaves, and it worked out so well! Claire on the other hand....was busy. She would not sit still for more than .2 seconds, and refused to let us hold her for more than .3 seconds. Basically all of us were just chasing her around. There was just too much to explore, she didn't want her photo taken! Such is the life of a two year old, and such is the life of a photographer photographing a two year old! As diva as it sounds, I don't think these would have worked out without the two of them there! Sarah mainly did the shooting, and sweet Hayley assisted by trying to help Claire and get her attention. She had this amazing bird puppet that Claire thought was hilarious. Thank you thank you thank you Hayley for helping us corral Claire, and helping Sarah get a shot of Claire looking in the general direction of the camera. You were ah-mazing! Thank you both SO much for doing this for us!!! We love all of the photos!!!

My buddy Skip Cohen who hosted Skip's summer school in Las Vegas last summer said that quote and boy oh boy is he right! I attended the conference not knowing anyone, eager and ready to learn as much as my little brain could soak up.

I met these two lovies at in-n-out on one of our lunch breaks. Meet Hayley, and Sarah They are semi-related (cousins in law I believe?), and came to the conference together. After conversing, I found out they were from Utah! Later on when Jon Canlas was giving his presentation, he asked how many people (out of around 250) were from Utah, the three of us raised our hands...and we were the only ones! I was shocked because supposedly Utah is such a "saturated market" of photographers, and there were only three of us there.

We had dinner the next day and became fast friends. We talked, and talked, and shared ideas, and brainstormed, and laughed and talked some more. We couldn't wait to get back home and get together again and again. I can't even tell you how grateful I am that I met these two!!! There are two surprising dynamics to our friendship. First of all, we are non competitive what.so.ever. We each have such individual styles and differ in so many ways that Hayley's clients wouldn't want me, and Sarah's clients probably wouldn't favor my work either because they like their work cause it's suits them. You can tell by looking at each of our websites how different we are from each other. And second of all, we are a group of thee girls (usually a toxic combo) that get along together so well!

One of us usually calls the other at least once a week with a photography dilemma, or question, or help, or idea that's worth sharing. I'm usually like "Help! My client asked for this or that, how would you handle this scenario?" or "Help! How do I do xyz in photoshop!" It's so fun because each of us knows exactly what it's like for the other in the biz, and can be of great support.

We went to Moab together, almost died together, and did each others family photos this year. Skip couldn't be more right that the friendships is where it's at! It is so nice to have such a great little support system. Meeting so many incredible people from all over the country was worth the time, effort, and expense of going to skip's summer school last year. I can't wait to go to more conventions this year (hopefully WPPI, and Skip's Summer School again) and meet more amazing and inspiring people.

I hope you all are having just the most joyous day cozy and warm with your family and friends, I just felt like doing a little reminiscing on this beautiful day.

My first semester at Dixie College about 7 years ago, I had to give a vocal recital where I had to sing the song “In the bleak mid-winter”. I couldn’t get through it without crying. I still can’t get through it without tears! The lyrics of the last verse are some of the most touching lyrics I have ever heard.

What can I give Him, poor as I am?

If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb.

If I were a wise man, I would do my part.

Yet what can I give Him? I will give my heart.

Sometimes around Christmas, (especially this year with the economic crisis that many families are facing), we feel like what we can give is still not enough. We don’t have enough money, or we center all our focus on buying gifts and the consumerism of Christmas. This song really puts things in perspective for me. I think the best thing we can do during Christmas, is serve others, and share our love. Cheesy as it sounds, Christmas is all about family, and love. I am so thankful for both in my life.

I am so thankful that Christ came to this earth. I know that he came to this earth to redeem us so we can hopefully live with Him and our Father in Heaven again. I can feel his love in my heart and soul. I can feel of his love because I can feel the urge to help, serve, and love others, as He would have me do. In the chaos of the season, I feel peace in my heart. And every time I hear the beautiful music of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, I especially feel it. I love my family more than any words on this earth could describe and am so happy to spend it cozy and warm in our home together.

Disclaimer: I just may go on a little tangent.

One of the things I was dead set on doing while we were in Maui was to do a little whale watching. This pod of humpback whales feed on krill in Alaska in the summer months, then make the journey to Hawaii during the winter months to breed, give birth, and train their babies to be strong for the journey back to Alaska. They love the warm waters of Hawaii because it is safe and virtually predator free.

So we got up bright and early to catch a boat at 7 am (which really wasn't that bad since it's basically 10am Utah time). On our journey out to sea, our eyes were peeled for whales. We saw a few off in the distance, primarily a little baby doing some jumps. But then, all the sudden, right next to our boat, three big whales were breaching and spouting out of their blowholes. Wow. Wow. Triple wow. Our guide figured that it was two male humpbacks trying to impress a female. After all, it was mating season!

This is the way whales should be seen and enjoyed by us humans. I am really not a fan of sea world at all. It is completely inorganic and unnatural for whales of that massive size to be swimming in circles in a tank with virtually no stimulation. It's like putting us in a windowless circular padded room. It is unnatural and inorganic for them to be waving to the crowd and splashing and launching trainers in the air. I'm sure it is amazing to see, but I'm just really not a fan. Whales should be seen in their natural habitat doing things that come natural to them. Seeing them this way is so much more awe-inspiring.

The first time I saw humpbacks was in 2007 hiking to the Makapuu lighthouse on Oahu. It changed my life. This time around, it was just as breathtaking. Seeing these whales brought tears to my eyes. They truly are just the most incredible creatures. Here are some photos I took from our phenomenal morning.

We were on a boat, but another way of seeing them is in a raft. The rafts can legally get much closer to the whales than the boats. The whales are federally protected since they are endangered. The great news is, since poaching whales became illegal in the 70s, their population has grown exponentially and they are not afraid of boats or rafts anymore so they swim right up to us and show off!

Do you know what is hilarious? On the boat they had for sale photos of whales just like mine (but of course mine are better hehe) for "just in case" you didn't get the photo you wanted. At 9 frames per second, I've got my shots thank you! No need to purchase your stinkin photos. hmmm...maybe I should sell them my prints. hehehe

Check out this guy. He willingly swam within the legally protected distance of our boat which was fine by me!

Maui Vacation Itinerary: A whole lotta nothin

Usually when I plan a trip, I am go go go go and more go! I want to do and see everything I possibly can. It usually drives people nuts. It drove my sister nuts when we went to NYC, Washington DC, and San Diego together, I am sure it drove my mother in law and sisters in law nuts when we went to San Fran, and I'm sure it quietly drives Brant nuts who is a laid back and chill dude. Surprisingly with this trip, I didn't plan a thing! I knew I maybe wanted to do or see a couple of things, but would decide when we got there what to do. I mainly just wanted to lay and sit around. These past 6 months have been beyond insane! (Please don't let me get that insanely busy again, capeesh?) Here are some photos I took while I was just sitting around. It was quite enjoyable!

One of our favorite things to do when we visit Hawaii is to stop by the road side fruit stands. I mean, can it get any better than a local Maui Gold pineapple? We gorged ourselves on fruit and shaved ice while we were there.

I saw a guy on the beach who had a 7D and a 70-200 lens so I said "Yes! This guy knows how to handle a camera!" so I handed him mine, and he took this shot for us.

From Kaanapali beach right outside our hotel you can see the other major islands Lanai and Molokai. It was so neat to see the other islands off the coast. I've been to 3 out of 7 of the Hawaiian islands, maybe next time I'll visit Molokai and Lanai and knock out 5 and 6 on the list. Our boat we went on (more on that later) got really close to Lanai, does that count? :)

Maui Alii Kula Lavender Farms

I got a great recommendation from my friend Tami who is Maui born and raised to visit the Lavender farms in upcountry. It was so beautifully refreshing, rejuvenating, and relaxing. The farm is nestled up on a mountain on a steep hillside. The air is thick and humid. The day we were there, we were literally in a cloud. You could see the fog mist rolling by right in front of you. My skin welcomed the humidity as a break from dry Utah. When we stepped out of the car, and filled our lungs with humid lavender aroma, I could have cried it felt so good. We stopped in the shop and bought just a couple things. I decided that for once I would get just a little something for myself. I don't know about you, but when I travel, I usually spend all my spending money on gifts for everyone else, and usually get nothing for myself. Since I had hardly any room in my bag to bring home things to everyone, I decided to get just a little something for myself (Sorry guys!). I got some essential oil from lavender grown on the hillside. It smells just out of this world. Here are some photos of our little excursion to upcountry.

It makes me so happy to hand my big hefty (intimidating) camera to a stranger and they can take a half decent photo of the two of us. Yay! p.s. Don't diss our matching chacos. Yes, we are nerds.

Instead of gifts for eachother this year for Christmas, Brant and I decided to take a trip. We both agree whole heartedly that memories and experiences are much more enriching and important than stuff. Sure he could get me a beautiful sweater or some nice stationary but that only lasts so long. These memories will last forever. We saw an incredible deal on one of our favorite travel websites that was way too good to pass up, so quite impulsively, we booked it! It was amazing. The sunshine was so good for my soul. I usually get pretty bad seasonal affective disorder so the break from the cold, grey inversion was welcomed. I will blog about some of the experiences we had in the coming days, but for now, here are a couple of pictures.

It really is beautiful, but I have a very hard time with it. Winter that is....it's tough! Here in Northern Utah, it snows from the end of October into May. It hasn't gotten above freezing all week last week. Let's hope I can survive till May!

Meet the Fierro family. They are our really good friends and neighbors. We love them to absolute death! Their little girl Bella was born the same week as Claire, and look how long her hair is!!! When Bella was a baby, we used to call her (and still call her) "The Wig". Her brother Matias is the worlds biggest sweetheart and is in love with his toy cars. Their parents Carina and John are seriously, no lie, some of the funniest people we know. So you can imagine how much fun we had when I took their family photos! Fierro Fam, Thanks so much for asking me to do your family's photos. I am thankful to be a little teeny part in your family's history. LOVE you guys!!!!

Thursday's Thoughts: Katherine vs. Katie vs. Kate

Oh the many names I go by! Plus a billion more nicknames from my parents who can never even call people by their names. They are notorious for giving nicknames for the nicknames. It's exhausting keeping up with it and having to explain the nicknames of the nicknames of the nicknames to everyone. :)

I was born Katherine. My mom said that she had every intention of calling me Katherine. But when my personality came out, everyone started to call me Katie. So that is what I went by when I was growing up all through high school, some of college, and some after college. It is what was chosen for me. When I decided to get real serious about my photography, and opening a business, believe it or not, I had such a hard time coming up with a name. Do I give my business a name? Do I make it an extension of my name? Do I come up with something unique? I ultimately decided to use my name. I'll be frank here, Pease is a tough name! When I was pregnant with Claire, I had such a hard time finding names that go well with Pease. Growing up I loved the name Reese for a baby. But Reese Pease...yeah doesn't work out so much. (Talk about giving your kid a complex!) When I married Brant, I was so happy to take his name as any bride is (unless your groom's name is Puckfarker. True story, we know of someone with that last name), but I didn't like the ring of Katie Pease. (No offense to Brant's brother Tannin's wife who is also a Katie Pease). But for me, it has to many E E E sounds. Katie Pease. So, I took matters into my own hands and decided to go by Kate. I've always loved it. A lot of my family and extended family call me Kate all the time anyway. And I feel it suits my photography too. Katie Pease Photography sounds too "cutesy" and I don't really feel that my photography is cutesy. Perhaps it sounds cutesy cause of all the E E sounds.

So I was out to dinner with friends a couple weeks ago. A big group date combined with some old and some new friends. The new friends said "So Kate..." and the old friends said "It's Katie! It's Katie!" and were giving me a hard time about the switcherooney. What's the big deal? I just dropped one letter! :) But I really don't mind. Call me whatever you'd like! Just don't call me late for dinner! Trust me, if you were my parents and sister, you'd call me "KK, Kakey D, KKD, Baby Quakes, Shorty, Kate K..." the list goes on and on and on. And if you were Brant, you'd call me a zillion other nicknames.
So there you have it on my many names. Katherine. Katie. Kate. You'll hear me go by all three (plus many many more), and feel free to call me what suits you best! :)

Out with the Old....

I love making improvements, and making things better. I got new business cards a while back and I thought I would show you what a difference it makes to have a good business card!

Here's the old one. Yuck! I'm glad I only had it for like 2 months. I hurried and made this one really fast because I was going to a convention and needed a business card to keep in touch with new friends I would make. I hurried and made it myself and sent it to print. It's on run of the mill paper. (And this particular one looks awful cause I dug it out of the back of Brant's wallet)

In with the new! Ooh la la! Custom designed logo by a professional, nice thick linen paper. So much better!

My card is like an onion, it has layers. :) Open first flap, photo of me so they know who this Kate Pease person is.

Here's what I love about it: Usually when you hand people a business card, they hardly give it a glace and just shove it in their pocket or wallet. Every single time I have given someone one of these, they stop, open it, look at it, ponder it, and proceed to ask me more questions whether it be about photography in general, my business or the pictures inside. Another thing I love about it is that because I can display some photos, and right off the bat people get a feel for my photography style without having to go to my website. Right away they can determine if they really like me and want to learn more, or if I'm not a good fit for them for what their looking for.

Plus, because it's a nice card that wasn't thrown together and printed very cheaply, they know I mean bidness! (That's business with some sass.)

And here's the back

I have to thank my dear husband Brant for designing the card for me (with exception to the logo). There's no way I could have designed it myself in Adobe Illustrator. I am so so thankful for a technologically/computery capable man at my disposal. Without him, I would most likely be conducting business by a rotary phone. No lie.

I met Jen at the Envision workshop this past summer. I was so excited when she asked me to do her family's photos. It's always a little flattering (and slightly intimidating) when another photographer asks you do do their photos. I am so glad Jen scheduled her session when she did because the weather was absolutely divine! It was so great to meet the rest of her family. Her kids Jensyn and Keaten were just an absolute blast to work with. I love photographing teens! They have such a great energy and spirit about them. Thank you Beardall family for asking me to take your photos and act a fool while doing so!

Cheyenne the family dog had a blast watching from the sidelines. Poor little guy is old, deaf and had an upset tummy that day, but based on the look on his face, he's as happy as can be!

Keaten was trying not to laugh here cause his dad kept saying "Model like David Beckham!" It was pretty funny.

I just couldn't get over how gorgeous Jensyn's eyes are! Her mom told me that a boy at school said they were like "Blue Diamonds" and I'd have to agree with that statement!

Some mornings when Daddy's gone to work, and it looks dreadfully cold outside,

and Claire and I want to stay snuggly and warm a little longer before we begin the day,

I'll bring her into bed with me. We'll snuggle and hold hands,

and we will usually enjoy a cinema together.

It is one of my favorite ways to start the day. :)

It was tenth grade biology class, third day of school. I sat on the front row, she sat on the second. I noticed that she was wearing a pink shirt that said "Princess" and pink vans. She kept a straight face looking forward while continuously fixing the front of her hair to keep it out of her face. I had long blonde hair that sometimes got a bit tangly, I leaned back to her and said "Do you have a brush?" She gave me a funny look and said "No." I later found out that she thought I was quite weird for asking her for a brush. What can I say? I was fifteen and quite concerned about my hair. Later in the semester while doing group Biology projects, I started singing (ahem...rapping) my favorite song at the time. "mmmm I'm goin down down baby yo street in a range rover." Her face lit up and she started rapping along "Shimmy shimmy cocoa puff listen to me now!" You know us white Southern Utah kids, we love our rap songs (specifically Nelly.) We knew at that point we'd be great friends, and were joined at the hip ever since. And do you know what's hilarious? Ten years later we still remember all the words to Nelly.

Jessica is my best friend from high school. I love her SoOoOoOo much! We have been through thick and thin together and never held anything back. I have always sought her advice on everything, she has supported me through all my endeavors (and was even my maid of honor at my wedding). She takes credit for me marrying Brant because when driving one day (me: 15, her: 16) she heard me singing (Britney Spears nonetheless haha) and said "You have a good voice! You need to come be in choir with me!" I joined choir, sang lots, got a vocal scholarship in college, and met Brant in college choir. I think she rightfully takes credit. :)

She made a surprise visit to my house this past week. I was thrilled when she said she was stopping by! It was a gorgeous day outside so I said "Let's go outside and take some pics!" She happily obliged, and I think we got some fun shots. I love you Jess!!!

On the way out the door, I exclaimed "STOP!!!" The light was just too perfect right in front of my french doors. I mean come on, HER EYES! Really? My goodness they're amazing! I've always been envious of her amazing eyes and long long lashes.

Apparently I'm pretty funny. Especially when I tell her to be serious. :)

She always has adorable shoes! Remember, pink vans? Jess, live closer so we can borrow each other's clothes again!

She said she raided her Dad's closet for these Ray Bans that he's had since like '94.

(Hopefully Dad doesn't see this and want them back cause they are dang cute!)

Some friends from back in the day used to call her "Cowgirl". When she saw this shot, she said "That's the shot I'm gonna use for my country album cover." hahaha Oh, and don't ever diss the song "Indian Outlaw" by Tim McGraw when she's around, she may not talk to you for days after the fact. :) :) :)

I knew how important it was to her to have a great family photo because she cherishes her boys more than anything. And for good reason! They are some of the most genuinely sweet, loving, and respectful boys I have ever met! Here you go Johnna, it brings me immense joy that you absolutely love how they turned out! Mini Sessions are $55 and include:

30 minute session

Photographer Time & Talent

An 8 x 10 high quality print of your choice

An online proofing gallery for 120 days

Up to families of 6, additional $15 per person if more than 6.

Additional prints and digital files available for purchase after session.

A full re-touch of desired prints or digital files

Mini Sessions will be held on November 11 - 13 (weather permitting) at Memory Grove (300 N E Capitol Boulevard Salt Lake City, UT 84103) There are a ton of unique backdrops to choose from at this location.

Leaf Fight!

While visiting in Logan, Claire and her cousins had a heck of a time playing in all the beautiful fall leaves. There were giggles heard round the world as they chucked handfuls of crisp leaves into the air and watched them lazily drift back to earth. These kids are so darn precious!!!

I absolutely adore how whimsical these next three photos are. It's like all the joy and wonderment of childhood all rolled into three frames.

Baby Crew happily watched the flurry of activity from the sideline...

...then decided to join in on the action.

We spent the holiday in Logan with all my in-laws. How fun it was to get all the little cousins together and go trick or treating. Since we moved, and I have been so insanely busy, I was super duper lame and didn't plan a costume. Thankfully, my sister in law Amory had a couple back-ups for me.

At first I thought maybe I'd go as...Marie Osmand or Miley Cyrus.

But then decided I couldn't pull it off so I gave the wig to my father in law who was a creepy female surgeon. hmmm....

forgive the grain y'all. I was pushin 6400 iso on this one.

Katie went as mustard, and Tannin went as a personal trainer. bahahahahaha
